Feed Iowa First

Feed Iowa First uses donated plots of land surrounding local churches and businesses to grow fresh, organic produce for local food pantries. Last year Feed Iowa First produced and donated over 40,000 pounds of organically grown produce. A single acre of donated land can produce more than a ton of vegetables for the hungry and this year the organization is working to expand to 25 acres of vegetable production.

In addition to growing and donating organically grown produce, Feed Iowa First provides support for small and beginning organic vegetable farmers with training, pay for growing donated vegetables, and access to equipment they lack.

Feed Iowa First founder Sonia Kendrick is a ten-year military veteran who returned from Afghanistan to start a family and earn her Bachelor's degree. While in college, she found herself and her child among the more than 400,000 Iowans who go to bed hungry. She got food from a local food bank, volunteered there — and went on to start Feed Iowa First.

Frontier Co-op donated $35,000 this year to help Feed Iowa First continue its outreach into the community through its dozens of urban farms and growing partners. The contribution enabled the group to purchase organic seed, insurance and reusable packaging material.
