Holiday Hours

Frontier will be closed Thanksgiving Day, November 22, and we will resume normal operations Friday, November 23. We will also close Monday and Tuesday, December 24th and 25th, to allow our employees to enjoy their Christmas holiday and Tuesday, January 1, for New Year's Day. From Wednesday, December 26, through Monday, December 31, we'll maintain reduced crews in departments that are essential to our daily business operations and resume normal operations on January 2nd. Regular Customer Service hours will be maintained (7 AM to 6 PM Central Time) except for the three days we are closed. All orders will be processed as usual — although perhaps with a little extra merriment, given the season.

Women's Herbal Conference Draws 600+

We just heard from our old friend — and herbalist extraordinaire — Rosemary Gladstar that the 25th Anniversary Celebration of The New England Women’s Herbal Conference was a great success, with over 600 women celebrating the feminine and exploring the wisdom of green healing.

Frontier is a long-time supporter of the Women’s Herbal Conference, which also uses sponsors’ contributions to help causes such as United Plant Savers, with its ongoing commitment to the conservation and cultivation of medicinal herbs; the Gail Ulrich Scholarship Fund, which provides financial assistance to students attending herbal education programs; the Sari Project, a charity helping fund orphanages in India; and the Basket Project, which sends support to rural schools in Vietnam villages.

Aura Cacia Educator and Aromatherapist Charlynn Avery attended the conference this year and gave us her impressions:

As a first-time attendee at this conference, I was immediately impressed with the level of organization — there are a lot of details involved with providing education to 500 women. The conference was sold out, and it became apparent why after my first few classes. The education was outstanding — herbalists and practitioners from a diverse array of backgrounds and from all over the globe were presenting. I listened to other aromatherapy presenters, and I also learned about healing traditions in the Amazon, specific medicinal plants in the Northeast, herbal healing for children from birth through adolescence, and the financial advantages of making wise ecological choices. I heard stories of herbal traditions in America and was entertained by musicians, dancers and performance artists.

There was a diverse group of attendees — holistic veterinarians, physicians, nurses, physical therapists, massage therapists, teachers, psychologists, social workers and a plethora of herbalists (community and family alike), naturopaths and aromatherapists. It was amazing to be in the presence of great thinkers and healers and in the company of such wonderful women. I have never before experienced such an empowering and positive community-building experience! I came away from the weekend full of knowledge, with a renewed sense of love for nature — and a deep pride in the company that I work for. Frontier was mentioned several times throughout the weekend, and many thanks were given to us for our support. I'm proud of our support for this educational event for women, and I hope that the New England Women's Herbal Conference is something we will continue to participate in for years to come.

Promoting Holiday Spices with New Consumer Website

Holiday WebsiteWe've created a co-branded (Frontier and Simply Organic) holiday site for consumers that offers holiday recipes, cooking tips, and in-store coupons, as well as other informative and entertaining features. The site will be available with fresh content throughout the holidays. Spices purchases go up about 30% during November and December while baking flavors and extracts shoot up 65% to 88%. So it's a great time to remind consumers to stock up. Feel free to link to our holiday mini-site at www.frontiercoop.com/holidays.

We Support Prop 37

Prop 37We believe GMO ingredients should be identified on product labels and wish the supporters of Prop 37 success in the election. Here's a recent post about our position on Prop 37 on our Cayenne Room blog by our CEO Tony Bedard:

Frontier supports Proposition 37, the legislation on the ballot this fall in California that requires labeling of food containing genetically modified organisms (GMOs). We hope this proposition will pass in California and inspire national legislation.

We oppose genetically engineered foods in general, but our support for Prop 37 comes from an even more fundamental position — we all have a right to know what’s in the food we are eating.

We should have the choice to avoid food containing genetically engineered material. Advocates of GMOs should not be allowed to sneak unwanted genetically engineered foods into our shopping baskets by hiding the facts from us. We have always practiced full disclosure of ingredients at Frontier, and we hope Californians — and people across the nation — will demand the same of the GMO industry. Identifying genetically engineered foods on labels is the only honest and fair course of action.

Reducing Our Carbon Footprint

Sustainability ReportWe like to offer you an occasional snapshot from our latest Sustainability Report. This month's entry, about water usage at Frontier, comes from the Operations section of our 2011 Sustainability Report.

Our climate change objective is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and offset 100 percent of remaining direct and indirect emissions. In Greenhouse Gas Protocol language, our intention is to offset Scope 1 (fuels burned on site) and Scope 2 (electricity) emissions. We also measure some of our Scope 3 emissions (those resulting from indirect business activities), such as business travel, commuting, and Frontier Direct shipping. We offset all of our direct and indirect emissions by purchasing Green-e certified, renewable energy certificates from Bonneville Environmental Foundation (BEF).

While our energy demands have increased with company growth over the years, we still strive to increase our carbon emission efficiency. In 2010, for example, we were able to decrease pounds of CO2 per unit of production.

Here's an example of how we've worked to meet our emissions goal: In 2010 we switched from using recycled polystyrene peanuts to a 100 percent biodegradable starch-based packing material. Then, in 2011, we started producing the peanuts at our own facility, keeping 56 semi trucks a year off the road and eliminating 31 tons of carbon emissions annually. And we continue to work to find sources that are closer to home for some of our packaging materials.

Board Election Results

Linda BoardmanThank you to all our co-op members who voted for our Board of Directors this year. We’re proud to welcome Linda Boardman as the newest member to our Board. Linda has more than 20 years experience in the natural products industry, including serving as President of Applegate Farms, a mission-oriented company focused on supporting sustainable and humane animal-raising practices. Linda’s experience and knowledge will be a tremendous asset to our co-op.

Incumbent Adam Strauss won re-election. There was also an at-large position to be filled, and the Board selected long-time member Gene Kahn to return in that capacity.
