Book Review: Peas and Thank You, Simple Meatless Meals the Whole Family Will Love by Sarah Matheny

Peas and thank you is an adorable book with some seriously good recipes. The pages are brimming with Sarah's enthusiastic, clever voice as well as family photos of her couldn't-be-cuter daughters, Gigi and Lulu, and her husband, um, Pea Daddy. Her family is involved because she's committed to teaching her kids about healthful food, much the way you might teach kids about manners (hence the title of the book).

So the book is a fun read. But it's also inspiring and helpful. Sarah explains how (and why) she made the transition to healthful, vegetarian food for her family, assuring us all the way that meals built with fresh produce, whole grains, legumes and nuts are not only delicious but easily prepared, too. (While she doesn't market this, the recipes are mostly vegan.)

In an opening chapter on the pantry, Sarah offers her list of must-have ingredients, family-friendly products, cookware recommendations and information resources. Food chapters are: Breakfast at the IHOP (International House of Peas); Beyond Pea B and J: Lunches, Salads, and Soups; Peas on the Side: Snacks, Sides and Sauces; Sure to "Peas" Dinners; and Sweet Endings for Sweet Peas. Luscious color photos and "Peas Points" accompany the recipes. ("Wraps can be messy for little hands, so feel free to serve the seitan over torn romaine lettuce for a salad version or atop brown rice for a hearty stir fry.")

If you're interested in making the transition from a typical SAD (Standard American Diet) to one that is truly nourishing, you'll find plenty of help here. And if you're already enjoying vegetarian or vegan fare, you're bound to find some terrific new recipes to try.
