Adding Teas to your Healthy Diet

If you're a tea-drinker, you know the special joy a nice cup of tea can bring to your day. If you're not a tea-drinker, you may want to consider adding a cup or two to your daily routine, not only for the warmth and flavor, but also for the health-inducing properties tea can provide. True teas (those made from the shrub Camellia sinensis ) fall into four separate classifications--black, green, oolong, and white--each healthful in its own way.

In the past few years, green teas, and more recently white teas, have been particularly touted for their healthful antioxidants. Antioxidants are substances found in a variety of foods that help protect against diseases such as cancer and heart disease and also protect against premature aging. (Antioxidants are also found in dark, leafy greens, red cabbage, yellow and orange vegetables, and fruits such as berries, cherries, red grapes, and yellow and orange fruits.) Recent research has found new health-promoting properties for black and oolong teas as well. In fact, many experts put them on a par with green and white teas for health benefits. (Herbal teas--the infusions of botanicals other than Camellia sinensis --are more properly called tisanes. They are often used as tonics and to address specific situations. For example, peppermint tea is renowned for providing support for the digestive system.)

Frontier offers one of the most diverse selections of loose-leaf tea available. Loose-leaf teas are recognized as being consistently higher-grade and more full of flavor than teas in prepackaged tea bags.

Frontier carries an extensive selection of Organic Fair Trade Certified(TM) Teas so that consumers can enjoy fine teas with the assurance that they are ethically sourced. (Note that many of these teas are also available in convenient 20- to 30-cup packages --great for trying a variety of teas!) The purchase of Fair Trade Certified(TM) products ensures that farmers in developing countries receive a fair price for their crops, which in turn enables the farmers to feed their families and develop their communities with projects such as schools, hospitals, and safe water supplies. In addition, Fair Trade is also nearly always synonymous with organic production (as it is with Frontier's Fair Trade teas), which means the farmers are able to preserve and protect their land for future generations.
