Frontier Natural Products Co-op™ Supports Social Responsibility in India
Premium vanilla product assists farmers and children with 1 percent of sales to food program, provides women viable wages

Norway, Iowa (January 10, 2006) — Frontier Natural Products Co-opFrontier Natural Products Co-op(TM), the leading brand of baking flavors in natural foods, has introduced Indian Select Vanilla Extract, a premium quality organic vanilla sourced directly from India. Sales of the product support social programs benefiting the farming community where the vanilla is grown and children throughout India. Frontier began working with the small farmers group that supplies the product through a Frontier program created to find and develop new socially responsible suppliers with high-quality products.

"This vanilla extract is a tremendous find for us," says Brett Karminski, Frontier's seasonings category manager. "It's absolutely top quality vanilla, with a distinctive sweet and creamy flavor that is full, rich and perfect for baking. We're thrilled to be able to offer a product this good that is coupled with tremendous opportunities to develop social programs."

Karminski says the company is hoping people will both recognize the premium quality of the vanilla and want to join Frontier in supporting commendable social programs with their purchases.

Through a special agreement, part of Frontier's payment for the product is earmarked to help the community and environment where the vanilla is grown, strengthening the two- to five-acre sustainable family farms of the growers and helping prevent the farm families from being forced into large cities and poor-paying jobs.

The fund supports the conversion of land to organic, ethically harvested, biodynamic agriculture and provides additional pay to the sorters and other workers involved in production. These workers are predominantly female almost unheard of in India, where women are seldom given good employment.

Also, the farmers group that produces Indian Select is part of a larger non-profit Indian organization that does charitable work with the nation's poor including helping feed 100,000 needy children every day. Frontier is making an additional donation of 1 percent of the sales of Indian Select Vanilla directly to this life-sustaining program.

"We were inspired when we met Sripathi Ramai Hedge, an Indian farmer," says Karminski. "He told us he had sadly watched the erosion of land and decline of the small farms in his area. But three years ago he implemented biodynamic farming and lush, healthy vanilla vines are now prevalent. Sripathi and other farmers like him produce Indian Select Vanilla. Frontier is providing this group of farmers with fair prices and the support they need to produce and sell top quality organic products."

Frontier Indian Select Vanilla Extract is certified organic by Quality Assurance International (QAI) and bears the USDA Organic seal. It is also kosher certified by KSA, and is freshness sealed and dated. Indian Select is available in a 2-oz. bottle with a suggested retail price of $6.49.
