American cheese, also known as processed cheese, takes natural cheeses and adds ingredients, often with the goal of making the cheese more consistent and shelf-stable. American cheese was first made by the Kraft company in 1916. Due to strict labeling guidelines, some processed cheese cannot be labeled as true cheese and are called cheese spreads.
