Yogurt has a definition established by the FDA. These are called Standards of Identity, which are written for many of your favorite products. To be labeled yogurt, a product must be made using approved dairy ingredients and a bacterial culture. The National Yogurt Association (NYA) extended this definition that, in order to carry their seal, a yogurt must contain a minimum amount of cultures per gram when manufactured. This amount is set at 100 million. These bacteria, when live and active, are known to have positive affects on digestion as well as other health benefits.
