This rich soup simmers all day in your slow cooker. Split peas are dried peas that cook more quickly than dried beans, as they are split by a machine. Because the liquid doesn't have to penetrate through the peas' skin, the peas soften easily, even in the presence of the salty ham. You can find yellow and green split peas in the supermarket. Serve this hearty soup with a spinach salad made with pears and walnuts.
