Frontier's Sustainability Report Frontier Sustainability Report

SUSTAINABILTY

Our online sustainability report is divided into seven major areas — sourcing, products, packaging, customers, operations, employees and community. Within each of these areas , you will find our key environmental and social objectives, what we are working on, our goals and our results. We invite you to share your thoughts with us as you read about our sustainability efforts. At the bottom of every section there's an email link you can use to send us your questions, opinions and ideas.

We report in accordance with our fiscal year, which runs from July 1 to June 30. For ease of reading, we refer to the year according to the end of the fiscal year — for example, the fiscal year ending 6/30/11 is referred to as 2011.

Frontier CEO, Tony BedardA Message from our CEO

Since we began in 1976, Frontier has been a socially responsible company. Many aspects of our co-op have changed, but our commitment to our employees, customers/owners, and grower partners has never wavered. Our ability to responsibly balance the needs of these key stakeholders has been the key to our long-term success.

We started out differently from other companies. We provided daycare for our employees’ children and fed our staff nutritious organic meals. We understood the importance of maintaining a healthy work/life balance and catered our policies and practices in a way that made working at Frontier much more than just a job.

We also quickly realized that our success is not only rooted in our work here, but in the grower communities around the world where we source our products. In this sustainability report detailing the entire range of our environmental and social impacts, you'll see we have a special strength in improving life for those grower communities.

Our Well Earth sustainable sourcing program is an outstanding example of true partnership with growers. We source directly from small farmers in some of the most remote regions in the world. This not only creates profitable, stable markets for these supplier partners, but it also gives us the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to their communities’ healthcare, education, and business development. When our grower communities flourish, Frontier benefits. When Frontier flourishes, our grower communities benefit.

Our mission — “Nourish people and planet. Always be fair” — embodies our commitment to doing business in a sustainable way. Our declared purpose to “do great things in the communities in which we work” guides us at home and abroad.

This sustainability report also shows that we’re not perfect. Measuring yourself against goals sometimes identifies areas of weakness. We have had some small setbacks, but we feel our successes far outweigh our shortcomings. In any event, we will continue to be — as we have always been — fully transparent about our sustainability successes and failures.

Our work in becoming a more sustainable company will never be done. Neither will our commitment to build an organization where sustainability is a consideration in every task we do and every decision we make. We welcome your input on how to do this better and invite you to start by reviewing this report.
