Well Earth Partnership: Ugandan Vanilla

Well Earth Partnership: Ugandan Vanilla

Ugandan vanilla uniquely has two annual harvest seasons — and is prized for its unusually high levels of vanillan, the active flavor compound in vanilla. In recent years, extreme price volatility in the global vanilla market has taken a toll on vanilla in Uganda and threatened the livelihood opportunities for vanilla farmers there.

To help address these challenges, we're taking a dual-faceted approach. As a member of the Sustainable Vanilla Initiative‘s Steering Committee, Frontier Co-op is an active participant in a group of companies working with the Ugandan government, non-profit organizations, and the local vanilla industry to stabilize conditions for farmers.

In addition, we're working with Uvan, our Well Earth sustainable sourcing program partner in Uganda, to provide direct services to help the farmers who grow the vanilla we source. Frontier’s $56,000 in grants support farmer training in good growing practices so they can produce consistently higher quality vanilla and boost their income opportunities.

We also provide pre-harvest loans to farmers and are supporting an organic feasibility study that we hope will create another opportunity for farmers to add value to their vanilla.

With the help of our Well Earth sustainable sourcing program, progress is being made toward a better future for this rich and mellow-flavored vanilla.
