Frontier Co-op Unveils New Sustainable Bulk Packaging

The new packaging, which rolls out in February 2023, can be recycled at any location that accepts plastic bags.

Norway, IA—Frontier Co-op will soon offer many of its one-pound bulk spices, herbs and botanicals in easy-to-recycle packaging as a part of its decades-long commitment to sustainability. The member-owned cooperative estimates the change will keep nearly two million plastic bags out of landfills every year.

“The driving force behind Frontier Co-op has always been our belief that doing good, works,” said Stephanie Yoder-Schulte “We take care to ensure the products we carry are grown, harvested, and sourced in a responsible way, and we set our standards high. Now we have an opportunity to change the way bulk spices are packaged and set an example for other companies looking to be more sustainable. It’s something we’re very proud of.”

The new packaging swaps industry standard multi-laminate bags with ones made from clear plastic coated in ink, making them more likely to be accepted at recycling facilities. The packaging can be recycled at any location that accepts plastic grocery bags, regardless of where the item was originally purchased. To help consumers find recycling drop-offs close to home, Frontier Co-op recommends using How2Recycle’s locator tool available at

“Due to complex manufacturing constraints, we can’t replace all of our bulk packaging yet. But we’re moving in the right direction and doing so mindfully,” said Stephanie Yoder-Schulte. “We’re not interested in a quick, easy or temporary fix—we want to invest in long-term solutions that will continue to evolve our packaging for the good of our planet.”

This new packaging will roll out in our bulk production facility with select SKUs beginning February 2023. Products will be available for purchase at
