Wholesale Food Rescue

Sharing Excess is a Philadelphia-based nonprofit that partners with retailers, wholesalers and farmers to connect surplus food with those experiencing scarcity. Despite 40 million people facing food insecurity, 40% of the nation’s food supply goes to waste.

To help bridge this gap, Sharing Excess rescues and distributes food, working with over 190 food businesses to relieve food insecurity across 66 zip codes — a massive initiative powered by their custom app.

In partnership with the Philadelphia Wholesale Market, Sharing Excess opened a one-of-a-kind on-site sorting and gleaning operation inside the produce market terminal. Within two years, the Wholesale Food Rescue program alone rescued 12 million pounds of fresh produce, distributing it across hundreds of food banks in the area.

In 2024, Sharing Excess will receive a $30,000 grant from Simply Organic to open a second Wholesale Food Rescue program at Hunts Point Produce Market in New York City — the largest produce terminal in the world.
