Frontier Co-op is a long-time supporter of Kirkwood Community College's Hospitality Arts Department. In addition to monetary donations, we provide spices for the instructional kitchens of their Culinary Arts program.

We've also created an annual scholarship for undergraduate students in the program. Each year the Frontier Co-op Giving Fund provides $1,000 each to three students to help offset the costs for their study abroad trips.

Since it began in 2016, the Frontier Co-op Hospitality Study Abroad Scholarship has helped students go to Cuba, Japan, Italy and Spain. The experience of studying abroad provides students with exposure to different cultures, which includes new foods, languages, hospitality approaches and ways of thinking. Experiencing and extending hospitality in another country develops a level of personal and professional maturity that's hard to duplicate through any other experience.

The 12-day course in Malaga, Spain, this summer includes classroom sessions as well as hands-on explorations of Spanish cuisine. Students can look forward to dining in and touring Spanish restaurants, shadowing a Spanish chef at work, excursions to learn about olive oil and goat cheese production, and visiting Malaga's Mercado Central to buy ingredients for their cooking classes.

Frontier Co-op is happy to support students in this innovative program at our local community college.
