A nice, simple, and deeply flavored homemade enchilada sauce thatās sure to impress. Deep tomato notes pair beautifully with the spicy and citrusy notes of the dark chili powder and go excellently with cheese, chicken, beef and plant-based proteins.
Makes 1 1/4 cups sauce.

Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon olive or other neutral oil
- 1/4 cup onion, diced
- 1 teaspoon garlic, minced
- 1 tablespoon flour
- 1 tablespoon tomato paste
- 1/2 teaspoon Frontier Co-opĀ® Sea Salt
- 1 tablespoon + 1 teaspoon Frontier Co-opĀ® Organic Dark Chili Powder
- 1 cup water
Directions
- In a medium saucepan over medium heat, add oil and onion. SautƩ for about 4 to 6 minutes, stirring, until translucent.
- Add garlic and sautƩ for another 1 to 2 minutes, until fragrant.
- Whisk flour into saucepan and mix with oil until a paste forms. Add tomato paste and whisk to blend.
- Slowly add water, whisking mixture to maintain a smooth sauce.
- Add dark chili powder and salt, bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes.
- Makes a great sauce for the top of enchiladas, or can be used as the filling if mixed with cooked chicken, beef or other proteins.
